Pams paintings are all executed on gesso panels. Gesso is an ancient technique originally applied as a ground onto wood in icon painting. The surface is a highly absorbant one and when dry Pam frequently sands or etches into it. Most of the paintings use fragments or details of paintings with which we are familiar in art history or from domestic interiors. These patterned areas are then juxtaposed with other surfaces or more open spaces associated with nature. They are presented as diptychs, triptychs or in sets of four and within the same painting the final surface may vary from high gloss to matt.
